Or maybe the father was convinced by others that he could get more money out of the situation if he did this.

I gather RICHARD, that you would prefer that people who have earned lots and lots of money spend it entirely on themselves, not do anything to bring attention to what they see as situations needing attention and help, never express a political opinion or any other opinion.

Leave all that to those who got lots of money the old fashion way...inheriting it?

My brother and his wife had two adoptions go south on them.....one the night before. In both cases the parent had a change of mind at the last minute....after having had expenses paid...etc.

    It hurt...it hurt them alot.

They are not rich rock stars but I really can't imagine it hurts any less when you are.

Well, I'm gonna get screwed in the inheiritance department.

Me thinks that it's just a tad self serving to announce, publicize or generally let people know you are doing some good by donating money, kidnapping kids by turning your 'donations' into column inches.

I find it funny that Gates, Murdoch, the idiot that owns the basketball team in TX cannot or refuse to make a 'charitable' donation without putting it on
    company letterhead.

    ------------

    Let them keep their money......

If I had the money, I'd spend a year donating it and my time-
Without the video cameras and press releases working in a town for the people.

A lovely clinic, well for clean water, school for a town is far better than a 3 zillion dollar donation that is more than likely to be misused by some AH third world politician-
take gander at the child molesting, theiving scumbags we have here in America...

    --------------------

For real philantrophy look up Dean Kamen, the guy that invented that people mover thing.....check out his work on the Stirling Engine..

He is putting his money where his mouth is......creating something that will help everyone-not a just a little town where the kids can be had for a few dollars and a jet plane ride.

    -------------------

If you have an extra room, I am available for adoption.

So....because she is famous and rich....and followed everywhere....she should not use that for good....so people use their earned fame to set an example of giving to those less fortunate, to fixing things, to helping. Hoping (often correctly) that if people see celebrities do it, they will follow. (It was very big during WWII as a way to sell war bonds.) What a sin!

I said it and will say it again...I am not a Madonna fan nor did I EVER think I would be defending her.

But...here is a woman who wanted another child and, after a difficult time carrying her last child to term, it did not happen "the natural way..." so she wants to adopt. Her fame means that WHATEVER she does will be filmed and analyzed.

She spends HER OWN money to fund six home for children in a country most of us could not find on a map.

She falls in love with one child and offers him a home.

Due to...who knows what...misunderstanding...change of heart...not enough money paid....the adoption falls through.

Lovely to see such compassion....such giving of the benefit of the doubt...of being non-judgemental.

My point was that I don't know how good of a parent she is, that should be most important, and I have no way of judging that. That doesn't necessarily have anything at all to do with money or fame, but it should have a lot to do with adopting a child.

    STOP IT!
Being older than you I remember seeing the stories about them..

MANY (MOST) of those celebrities fought in the war..

Baseball team rosters were filled with 4Fs what played in the place of many stars that volunteered for service.

Not only baseball, football and movie stars gave aa few years to U.S. was effort

I get really tired of seeing Clooney, Penn, Ciccone (ma dunce na) and the rest of the 'stars' selling their twist on the rest of the world.

We went to Somalia and Bosnia to help people and got shot at.

What makes Darfur and any other 3rd world country different?

    So ....

Let the public sector worry about those places.

We send USAid, the Peace Corp and any other relief workers in and they get kidnapped or killed.
We pay the ransom, the morons get richer, we send in troops and they get killed we get criticized and blamed for making a situation worse.
We leave and then we tick off another country and another generation.

Ask Ma DUH na how many security people she had as escoirts and scouting the way....

If we do it the right way we go in and get rid of the government and let the people rule themselves...

    Oh, we already tried that...

    P.S.

WHy are we worried about Darfur when we haven't cleaned up Louiisiana yet...

Oh, that's right, the stars determine the Cause du Jour...

Last time I remember you whining about Louisiana it was that the government should NOT clean it up....not the government's responsibility (unlike Iraq....)

can you try for a little consistency (and logic) with your lack of compassion???

(And you are full of bs on the war bonds....1. I am older than you....and 2. many of those who sold war bonds did NOT serve in the military...it was their way of giving...like Ronnie making movies....)

If you are tired of celebrities trying to help...stop listening...

Hmmm, I said that WE hadn't cleaned up Louisiana yet.

Why do people pay for insurance? to get screwed in the event of a catastrophe?

The private sector held many fundraisers for the area and my biggest bug up my arse are the people who don't want to go back and rebuild...

Everyone knows about Kate Smith and God Bless America. I saw Bing in a sailor suit once. Lombard was too old, Deitrich was not a citizen...Cagney was a gangster....

Yes I am full of mieda and not very compassionate when it comes to certain things in life. I cannot bleed the blood I don't have.

Not only that, how can I trust someone who makes their living in the make believe?

I have stopped listening to celebrities....but they keep showing up on the tube.

I think it's very nice that they do fly in to all these areas, flit around with a camera crew and come back to the United States to make more money to spend on mansions, cars and late night dinners at the Sunset Strip clubs-
get arrested for DUI, shoplifting and all kinds of stuff....

Why don't you turn it off?

You are not making sense. You complain if celebrities give time and money to others and complain when they spend it on themselves....

As is being discussed in another thread here...it is the meanness that bothers me....

It is easy to feel compassion for someone who is poor and illiterate. It is more challenging to feel compassion for someone who is rich and makes music I don't like.

Boy that is a low blow Sara! We dare not question Madonna's motives but of course this poor illiterate man is fair game. I just heard that Madonna will be on Oprah tomorrow. Oh Yippee. That will be one Oprah show I will be happy to miss.

That was exactly my point Pam! I don't question the poor man's motives...but I also don't question the woman's motives.

I feel sorry for everyone involved. A poor man who lost his wife and cannot afford to raise his child, the child who must live in an orphanage and grow up very disadvantaged, and a woman who wants another child.

ps...top warbond celebrity sellers....Bing Crosby, Marlene Dietrich, Lucille Ball, James Cagney, Carole Lombard, Kate Smith.....none on active duty....
