Jumping!

What I do is give my Rita (my puppy who also jumps on just about everyone) is knee in the chest. It will push her down, and sooner or later she will learn not to jump up.

I have the same problem, i knee coco EVERYTIME she jumps up on me, but all she does is walk backwards on her hind legs and wags her tail even faster because she thinks your playing! I even scold her when she does it, but still no use, she still thinks your playing! I am anxiously awaiting as to what people say to this thread!

with my dogs and the dogs at the shelter where I volunteer I just put my knee up so they don't jump up and say "off". It doesn't hurt them at all. there is this one dog at the shelter where I volunteer named Slate that jumps up no matter what you do, lol. I think he is learning, though.

The way I got my Husky,Thor,to stop jumping is to totally Ignore him. I had family and friends come over and they would pretend like he wasn't even there(Which is really hard to do!) When he would finally settle down and behave They would pet him and give him a treat. After about two weeks he finally got the picture!

my dog sadie jumped all over everyone [who wasn't a male] so we made her a bad girl can. it's made out of an empty soda can filled with pennies with the top covered. when sadie jumped, we shook the can and told her NO. she hyated the loud noise and therefore stopped jumping on people.

Don't EVER knee them in the chest!!! We humans aren't very coordinated and have kneed dogs in the chest that broke ribs.... and there are incidences where someone broke their dog's rib in such a manner that it pierced the dog's heart for near-instant death. Not a risk I'm willing to take.

Its all about attention. Why do they jump? Because its 100% effective in getting attention. We all bend down to pet them to keep them from jumping up. Practice practice, practice him learning that jumping up get NO attention. No words, no touch, no visual intereaction. NOTHING. Ignore them until all 4 paws are on the floor - either by standing politely, sitting, or laying down. They usually figure out pretty fast that when all 4 paws are on the floor that people approach them.

Get him into a sit stay before you open the door to let guests in. Work on making a reliable sit stay and he'll remain in it if he's been taught he HAS to remain in the sit stay. Or work on down stay if he's more apt to remain in a down stay. Work on tricks that reinforce sit stay or down stay so that he comes to think of it as a nice thing to do.

I agree with catnapper. Turn your back on them and don't say a word, They'll figure it out all by themselves! Everyone in the household must be involved with this training or it will be a waste of time.

Get to work on the sit-stays and until the jumping habit is broken, keep the dog on a leash or in another room when company comes.

These habits come from allowing a very young cute cuddly puppy to jump up for attention. Once they begin to grow up it isn't cute anymore.
