I'd say horses but they are not listed.
Considering house pets only though, I'd have to agree with Gail. It's ferrets hands down! I've owned a wide variety of animals over the years and ferrets always top the list year after year after year. lol

After seeing some of the horror stories both posted here and at the vet's office, any dog from a byb or puppy mill.
Reptiles for set up costs, upkeep not so bad
Dogs for ongoing costs
Horses definately for ongoing costs
Horses!
The dogs cost me the most on average, just because of their sheer number around here! They are also very good at finding new and exciting ways to injure themselves! Just spent 100 bucks today on Anvik--has an abscess!
But I have a $4000 cat too! Fortunately, he's healthy now!
Depending on the reptile the upkeep can be VERY expensive. Iguanas for one start out very small and grow very large. As they grow the need new set-ups. Our iguana has had 5 different set-ups in the 5 years we've had him and each was very expensive. A lot of reptiles are that way.Originally Posted by Alasse

My vote is horses. One of my former roommates had one and it cost her a lot of money to keep him boarded, groomed, fed, and to get the proper medical attention.
