He just woke from a nap? You were aware he was waking from a nap? Then its not him - its you. A prime time for puppies to pee is immediately after they wake from a nap. Take him out the second he's awake.

i am aware of that thank you! i always take him out after his nap, during his nap, before his name...i even get up at 3:00 in the morning to take him out! he hasnt pee'd in the house in a while so im thinkin it's not me and why would he choose to pee where he is sleeping? dogs arent supposed to like that! My question is...how do i make him NOT pee on my couch? He's basically potty trained, but why my couch he knows he's not supposed to pee on there of all places! Actually im just going to delete this post when i have more time...i gotta go to work! bye everyone!

Anyways, I have three theories:
1) Like Catnapper mentioned, puppies usually go right after they awake from a nap. That "lazy sitting position" sounds pretty darn close to what a female dog looks like before she goes potty (young males often urinate like females). Therefore, it's a possibility that you're misinterpreting his signals. For the first month, I misinterpreted Giselle's signals and I ended up having to completely remove the living room rug.
2) Dogs like soft surfaces to urinate in. Many dogs (including Giselle) have urinated/defecated on the couch because soft surfaces soak up moisture the quickest in the wild. This is why I have one less loveseatThere is nothing you can do but take him out frequently and stopping him if you see him in the act. It might also be a good idea to not let him on the couch for awhile.
3) He's marking his territory. Is Cainan neutered yet? If not, I would suggest doing so as soon as possible and cleaning the bajeezus out of your couch so that no remnants of his scent remain. However, it doesn't sound like marking because you said that he urinates in a sitting position. Nonetheless, I would still suggest cleaning and scrubbing that couch down!
When puppies have to pee:
- Right after waking up from any nap they take
- Right before they go to sleep at night
- approx. 10 minutes after each play session
- approx. 15 minutes after each drink of water they take, no matter how big
Just a tip lol.. learn from my mistake:
Waking him up and taking him out at 3:00 AM will get him into the habit of doing that when he's older so you're woken up at 3:00 AM every night, for the rest of his life. LOL

i dont have to wake him up at 3:00 in the morning to go out...he's already WIDE awake and on the verge on pee'ing!! he's the type of puppy that wont make a sound until it's almost too late...last minute sorta thing! but he's getting alot better, he sleeps through the nite now but he needs to go out about 6:00 every morning, sometimes earlier...sometimes later...just depending!Originally Posted by BC_MoM
Keep him on a leash with you indoors at all time so he is never unsupervised. You are aware when he is awake, you know when he takes a drink, and he won't be able to wander off to get to the couch to have an accident on it.
If you are away or out of the house (even for just five minutes to check the mail) or asleep at night, crate him.
He needs to be supervised. Where are you (or your parents) when he jumps up on the couch? He needs supervision.
well i am sitting right next to him when he is on the couch...my parents are another story!! They live in Connecticut...and in another town....soooo their supervision is necesarrily on them at all timeBUT....i only let them on the furniture because i dont mind...the couch is old and been through alot of good years and it doesnt matter if it gets ripped or torn...scratched and such...im not saying "HEY PEE ON MY COUCH IT'S OKAY" but you know what i mean! i let the dogs sleep on the couch....they usually only use it as that, never anything more...unless they get really excited while running through the house but normally it's just a second bed to them while i am home! He's doing so well though im so proud of him....he only pee's when he gets excited (when someone comes home) and it's only small spots...but im kinda thinking it's sorta when a child pee's the bed...they just dont realize they are doing it until last minute, which seemed to be the case while cainan pee'ing on my couch when he was still half asleep! thanks for your input!

and to the 3rd theory...he isnt neutered yet...not quite old enough...he will be in about month...maybe a little more!
i do understand that puppies need to go out AS SOON AS POSSIBLE after their napping...but cainan often wakes up to switch to the opposite side of the couch or to just move positions and i got up to use the bathroom and i must of woke up him when i flushed because when i came out his eyes were open and he was just watching me, i figured he was going to go right back to sleep so i thought i'd pet him a little and help me get off to la la land! because about 25 minutes earlier coco and cainan both woke up (i have a wrap around couch) and each dog was on either side of the couch and i petted them each a little, and they both fell back asleep pretty fast! i thought i could do that again....! guess not huh haha!!
If he's not allowed on the couch, he's not able to pee on it.If the couch is the only issue, maybe wait until he's fully potty trained to allow him up there. Or maybe he just kind of forgot, my puppy does that every once in a while.
Also, when I first got my puppy, I put a blanket in the crate with him. Woke up the next morning, he had peed all over it. I took the blanket out, left him in there just on the pan, and he hasn't had an accident in there since then. If they can't really feel it (like a puddle) they may pee on it.
lol, puppies are fun aren't they?
my dog has started doing something similar, when i let her outside i have taught her to sit down so i can put the leash on her. starting about 2 days ago she starts peeing before i can get the leash on her. i did an experiment( because i figured she just really had to go and couldn't hold it anymore the first time) where i would play with her and let her drink water and everything. i noticed the only time she pees while i am attempting to put the leash on is after she wakes up, no matter how long she is asleep. i tried to curb this by pulling her head upwards while i put on her collar so that she has to plant her rear end on the floor, but she still pees, even though she is sitting in it, weird huh?
note : this is IMMEDIATELY after she wakes up, i take her out, not making her hold it or anything, i wonder if dogs are just groggy and don't realise they are peeing ( kind of like kids that wet the bed).
anyways, hang in there, i'm sure he will grow out of it.
We had to be carefully to not pet Lou Lou when she first woke up or she would pee. He is still pretty young. Lou Lou is 11 months now, house trained but if she might have to pee and we pet her, we will have a puddle to clean up! He will out grow it! Clean the couch really good and good luck with your little guy!![]()
