It's better to spay before the first heat cycle. You significnatly cut down the chances of things like mammary cancer by doing it before. There is absolutely NO reason to wait until after.

Minnie got spayed two weeks ago. we went to pick her up and the vet asked if we knew that she was in heat. We didn't. They spayed her anyway while she was in heat and she was fine (we just had to keep her away from male dogs for a week because the hormones hadn't adjusted yet and she still smelled like she was in heat)
If that were me, I would of been upset that they didnt' call and let me know, so I could make the decission if I wanted to add the extra risk!Originally Posted by sumbirdy
