California pretty much booted petland out when they passed a law (correct me if I'm wrong, but this is how I interpreted it) that states that if a pet store sells a sick puppy they are liable for the vet bills up to a year after the puppy was purchased. It pretty much shut down pet stores selling puppies overnight. Thet's not to say it doesn't still happen, but it's becoming more and more rare.
