They can be, but it's a much harder surgery--harder for the vet, harder on the dog, more risk of complications and therefore much more expensive. The price is often doubled at least!

It's usually better to spay right after their first heat.
Your vet should be able to tell you how long after.

Actually it's better to spay BEFORE their first heat cycle. Has to do with hormone levels and greatly reducing their chances of mammary tumors later on in life.

Since the original question has already been answered, I thought I'd comment on the 'before/after is better' thing. I personally don't believe it's better either way, I prefer to do it after their first heat and at around 18 months of age....that's me. Others prefer to do it before, and since watching a dog like a hawk can be a difficult task for some owners when their dog is in heat then it is usually recommended that a dog be spayed before. That, and every heat they have, the risk for certain cancers rise, but that doesn't concern me as I personally don't feel the risk increase is that big.

It's better to spay before the first heat cycle. You significnatly cut down the chances of things like mammary cancer by doing it before. There is absolutely NO reason to wait until after.

Thanks Jess for the great sig of my kids!

Minnie got spayed two weeks ago. we went to pick her up and the vet asked if we knew that she was in heat. We didn't. They spayed her anyway while she was in heat and she was fine (we just had to keep her away from male dogs for a week because the hormones hadn't adjusted yet and she still smelled like she was in heat)

If that were me, I would of been upset that they didnt' call and let me know, so I could make the decission if I wanted to add the extra risk!

I would have been if i knew there was a risk!! But i didn't know then, now i do and its a little too late to confront them about it because it was one of those low cost clinics that travel around. I don't know where they are now.
