Several years ago a female duck laid 12 eggs right by my front door. We live in a development that boarders a farm which has ducks, chickens, geese. This duck whom I named Mommy Duck laid her eggs and then they hatched sometime in April. My daughter and I spent all summer with these baby ducks. Mommy Duck was wonderful as a mom. As the ducks got older she would walk them a little further everyday into the develpment, all the people in the develpment got to meet me because of this, I was known as the duck lady. At night just as the sun went down Mommy Duck and her little ones would come waddling back to sleep underneath the bush by my front door. She would come when I called her as well, having traveled 9 or 10 houses away with her babies. People loved seeing those little babies, 6 yellow, 6 black. Mommy in front babies single file in back. As Mommy explored with her babies one or two would get lost, twice they fell into sewer holes and my husband had to climb down and rescue them. As they started to get bigger they became more work, I purchased a large plastic container for them to swim in and of course food. One night a bad storm was approching and I got them all into the garage, the next morning my garage was full of duck poop. It was time to go to the farmer and have her get her ducks which they did. For my daughter and myself it had been a magical ducky summer, one we will never forget. So seeing your beautiful Jake made me smile all the more. Ducks do make wonderful pets on a farm and it looks like Jake is having a blast. How brave of you to grab that snake. I hope Jake's eggs hatch and you can experince the joy of ducky babies, cuter then cute. Wishing you and Jake all the best, Marigold![]()
