I don't know what else to say that our wonderful PTers haven't; I am just truely sorry for your loss. Just know in your heart you gave him the best, even if only for a short while. It is always difficult to lose those we love, especially when we don't feel it's time but just remember God planned his life-he planned for you to step in and love and comfort him, to be his hero.
