Unfortunately, you usually don't have enough light indoors for working without the flash, or - if the sun shines into the room - there's too much contrast due to shadow and light. I don't know if Canon cameras have this setting, but my Olympus camera has a setting called "available light". It's purrfect for taking indoor portraits of the cats without the flash. Next to the action setting it's the pre-set mode I use most often.

One of my favorite Kasha pictures taken on that setting.
