I used to have hermit crabs. I got the little ones with the painted shells from the mall kiosk. They were cute and fun to have while they lasted, but within a few months to a year they all died off. If you get hermit crabs, make sure you pick the active ones. My friend chose one that wasn't so active and told me it was like having a pet shell.

I love Hermits! They're good pets for young people and can be entertaining. I had 4 Hermies at one time, but Spider and Whitey died in about 3 months, and then Marble died in about 6 months, and then Desperex (my favorite) died in about a year. RIP Hermies . They have quite a range of life span.

Just curious for those who had hermies that died after a couple of months, did you supply them with a heat lamp?

All too often when I worked at PetCo people would return their hermit crabs because they forgot to mist them multiple times a day. Hermit crabs require a VERY high humidity level in order to survive. Keep that in mind.

Also, the warmer they are and more humid it is, the more active they are!!

I dont think they require a heat lamp I went to many sites and they all recommened Under Tank Heaters(UTH) and 70% humidity, I just keep that high with a spray bottle, Anyway at my petsmart the hermit crabs are treated terrible, they do the opposite you are supposed to they have a red hot heat lamp I beleive the ones made for uromastyx (sp?) and hard shalllow wood chip so no molting could be done and a tiny bowl for like 15-20 hermits in there and I even saw one dead in there!
