The bacteria is only useful for a cycle.. but unless your tank is 5-10 gallons or more (10 gallons or more preferred), it's useless trying to get a cycle. For anything smaller than a 10 gallon, very little could cause the cycle to crash and make it an unstable environment for the betta.
