I think they'll be fine if you separate them from one another. If they take the adjustment hard, try placing them in two separate tanks next to each other, and "wean" them away from each other.

I don't think they are together too long in the wild either. They get together in the mating season and do their thing then go their seperate ways. Its not natural for them to be stuck in a cage together and I think that would eventually cause too much stress in both of them.
