PixieBObs are gorgeous, but I imagine they're extremely expensive as most hybrid breeds. And anyway we don't have them in Europe...

I don't know that Pixiebobs are actually hybrids, and I'm certain Manx's aren't.

My favorite of the short tailed cats is the JBT, though. It's interesting that all three of these breeds get their short tail or tailessness from a different gene, too. It's amazing how the genetics of different breeds can have such an affect on them.

Actually it is suspected and believed that Pixie-Bobs are a hybrid. Carol Ann Brewer is the one who started the breed in the Pacific Northwest. For the breed history go to:

Hybrid of what two breeds? The article appeared to say they were developed from DSH's. Did I miss something?

Actually the father of the first Pixie Bob, Pixie, is widely believed to have been a cross between a DSH and a Bobcat. The owners of the DSH saw the cat and a Bobcat fighting, ran to save her and within gestation time, a litter was born that resembled the Bobcat. Carol Ann Brewer took home one of the kittens. After research, she discovered that it was fairly common in the Pacific Northwest, at least, for there to be litters that were believed to be a cross between a DSH (or other house cat) and bobcats.

Of course, she never had the DNA tested to determine if there is actually Bobcat in them, but they do strongly resemble Bobcats. Now, 21 years after the origination of the breed, there is no wild DNA in them. There wouldn't be, with it having been so long since the original 2 were bred to start the breed.

There is no "solid proof" of the bobcat heritage, but when you look at the size, shape and appearance, you can still see it.
