The file may be too large either resolution-wise or size-wise.

Here are the current restrictions for avatars:

They must be under 29.3KB in file size
They must be no larger than 60x60

EDIT: Another option is to just upload an image directly from your computer. Try saving it to your hard drive and uploading it instead of pasting a URL.
