Wow, a powerful story. This paragraph especially. Like an emotional
    blow to my heart.

"All this time I was standing at the head of the table. I could see the moment that one fifty-three went from a curious puppy to a terrified puppy. He did not like being held down and he started to struggle. It was then that I finally found my voice. I bent over the struggling puppy and whispered, "Sam. Your name is Sam." At the sound of his name Sam quit struggling. He wagged his tail tentatively and his soft pink tongue darted out and licked my hand. And that is how he spent his last moment. I watched his eyes fade from hopefulness to nothingness. It was over very quickly. I had never even seen Peggy give the lethal shot. The tears could not be contained any longer. I kept my head down so as not to embarrass myself in front of the stoic Peggy. My tears fell onto the still body on the table. "Now you know," Peggy said softly. Then she turned away. "Ron will be waiting for you."

What an emotional story, but one that needs to be shared.

I am so amazed by all of you who work at shelters and must deal with this reality on a daily basis. I always wish I could do more.

I read the web site about black dogs too. Very upsetting. Who wouldn't love a black dog?

    MAJOR LES here!! Wow!

They should require kids in school to take a class in animals, how to be responsible pet owners, etc. Kids are the future. We may not be around to stop it, but if enough kids are educated now, it may help down the road.

That story reminded me of the time I volunteered at the Dearborn Animal Shelter in Michigan. A kitten came in, found abandoned in a box outside the shelter. He was no more than 4 -6 months old and had been hit by a car. Because the shelter was at maximum capacity (cat carriers on top of cat carriers, 2 cats per crate), it was decided that he was to be euthanized rather than be treated for his injuries. I told the director I wanted to hold him while they gave him the injection so he wouldn't die alone. They looked at me very strangely and started to argue with me, but I meant business. I sat on the floor of the examination room holding that precious little thing in my arms, fighting back the tears, telling him that I loved him and to be happy at the RB. He went peacefully. He was black with a little white patch on his chest. It left a very profound scar on my heart.

After reading that compelling story, I can't stop crying. Crying for all the animals that have been needlessly euthanized because of irresponsible pet owners.

SPAY OR NEUTER YOUR PETS PLEASE!!!!
