I'm actually indifferent to it. It can be a beautiful day if celebrated correctly and for the right reasons and by the right people. I think it's too commercialized, but, I think most holidays are. I avoid shopping for the typical Valentine's Day gifts, but, I do think that the day can be a beautiful one.

I like Valentines Day, but I also like most holidays. I think I just enjoy celebrating. This year I bought a box of those Valentine cards that kids buy for their school mates and I wrote a little note to each one of my coworkers on it and attatched a peice of candy to everyone. I'm sure the boys will think it's silly, but I didn't want to exclude anyone.

I think it also gives me a good reason to indulge. I'm making Alexa a dinner that if I were to make on any other night she would complain about how fattening it was! It gives me a reason to get a bottle of wine and not feel like a lush for drinking on a Tuesday. I can get the ice cream cake from Baskin Robbins without feeling like a pig. I was also able to get her a gift that if I bought her for no reason she would get mad at me for spending money on her when she knows I don't have a lot to spend.

However we have a plan that seems to work for us, our anniversary is two weeks later so we take turns on who gets to be in charge of the day. This year I got Valentines day and she gets to take care of the anniversary plans. So for Valentines I don't expect anything from her other than for her to show up for the dinner I've made.
    I've been Defrosted!

Thanks for the great signature Kay!

Laura, that is EXACTLY how I feel about most holidays! Commercialized or not, who cares? It gives me an 'excuse' to spoil someone other than myself, or, a 'reason' to do something I wouldn't normally remember to do. Sure, I don't need a holiday to do that...but, I don't need lots of things in life that I have/want.

I say just go with the feelings, and if it happens to coincide with a holiday, or, it takes it up a notch (props to the big E), do it.

When I hear, "oh, it just is this, or, it is just that..." (referring to the commercial aspect of things) it makes me think- well, why choose NOT to do something that might bring a smile to someone's face, just to stick it to 'the man'? Doesn't make much sense to me.

In my family, Valentine's Day has ALWAYS been more about family love than about romantic love.....whoever says you need a romantic partner to celebrate love? Most of my cards came from and went to family, and always have.
