I prefer the stockier labs over the lean ones. Are they the *show* bred labs?

Hound: Irish Wolfhound... I am a sucker for very large dogs! (From DOTD)
Yes, this is an actual dog. He was 39 inches at the shoulder! When they stand on their hind feet, they can reach up to 7 feet!

The stockier labs are often known as English Labs. Both breeds can be shown but the English is more of the "original" lab.

    That's actually wrong

My girls are field Labs and they do not fit the breed standard. Luka might if her ears were shorter, her underbite were not there, her choco patch was not there, and she gained about 10 lbs, but ... yeah

Nova does not fit the breed standard too well but she is still a Lab. Field Lab wise, she looks fine, but there are many different types within the Field Labs.

And they can be referred to as English but amongst breeders this can get confusing. The correct terms are "show" and "field" as there are English and American Field Labs and American and English Show Labs (and some are of both decents).

Here is a good page in case you're interested: English or American Lab?
