It is funny, Sara, so don't feel badly about laughing! He is such a wonder cat....you're mad at him one minute and laughing and loving him the next! I'm just glad he loves us enough to stay!!!
I think we can all relate. Butter and other wonder kitties, I suspect, are put on this earth to teach us humility, or to help us learn how to relate and interact with different sorts.

I think Ritz would not be the friendliest cat to a stranger, although she is very loving with us. Her affection, however, is ALWAYS on her terms - she sends the signal (drop and roll for a tummy rub, but a quick light nip to signal that tummy time is over)...pickup and hold is welcome and signaled by standing up with paws in the air, but when she wants down, she wants down NOW, and signals by wadding herself up into a tortellini curl and turns into muscle, teeth and claws.
