Most of these work on mental triggers. Not sure about this test, but one that was explained to me is a lot simpler.

Ask people to guess a random number from one to four. Most (upwards of 98%) will answer three. Why? Because it is the one number that is not mentioned in the question. The military uses some similar tests with intel candidates to see how they are with pattern recognition.
