Okay, I've researched a lot in this area so here I go

Black Labs are the dominant gene in all of the Lab colors. They can carry every color. In order for a black Lab to have yellow puppies, they must carry the yellow gene. A black Lab who has puppies with another black Lab can result in a litter with all colors. Blacks are the only ones who can carry every single color, so in order for black puppies to be in a litter there must be a black parent.

Was there any chocolate puppies in the litter? If so, Sophie's mother is tri-factored, which means that she carries all three colors. And, in order for yellow puppies to result between these two, BOTH must carry yellow because chocolate can be dominant over yellow. But, if there were no chocolate puppies it is most likely that Sophie's mom doesn't carry chocolate, only black and yellow. Sophie's dad obviously carries chocolate and yellow (black is the only color that produces black puppies).

I can't remember if Sophie is a dudley or not. A dudley is like both of my Labbies (they're in my siggy ). Instead of a black nose and black skin around the mouth and eyes, they will have chocolate pigment. This will result in nearly every litter where there are both chocolate and yellow puppies in the litter. It is a fault, and the dog cannot be shown. My girls are still perfect in my eyes though Oh, and a lot of people will say that their dog used to have a black nose but has turned dudley. Your Lab cannot "turn" dudley, once a dudley, always a dudley. Born black, always black. BUT, most yellow Labs who are born with black pigment will have brown noses during the winter months or once they get older. They're skin will stay black, though.

The third one is the black X chocolate breeding, and it will give you all the color combinations that can happen in a breeding.
