I thought an american staffordshire terrier and an american pit bull terrier were two different breeds. Hmm...going to research a little. But, if someone has a site saying one way or the other, before I find something, post it, please. I'm wondering, now!

I thought/think this too but then I think the term "pit bull" is applied to describe a group of dogs and not one breed in particular.

Here's a site that lists them as two different breeds...... http://www.ukcdogs.com/breeds/breedlist.shtml

I said the name wrong, though...Staffordshire Bull Terrier (not American Staffordshire Terrier)...and the American Pit Bull Terrier...

Going to look at the AKC site, now...see what it says.

I checked on the AKC site, I SWEAR I saw the Pit Bull listed there before as an American Pit Bull, and I KNOW its a breed, but then its gone from the AKC site or was never there and I saw it somewhere else so it made me second-guess myself

Hmmm...interesting. The AKC lists an American Staffordshire Terrier and a Staffordshire Bull Terrier as two different breeds....

Yes i think the Am staff and staffordshire bull terriers are two different breeds. Staffordshire bull terriers are smaller than am staffs.

Then why does the UKC have both listed?? They have both the American Pit Bull Terrier AND the Staffordshire Bull Terrier listed as official breeds.

It also annoys me when the media sooo eagerly labels ANY bully-type dog as a "Pit Bull". the term has almost lost all meaning, anymore... because any Amstaff, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Presa Canario, American Bulldog, and basically any mixed breed dog with a meat muzzle can be a "Pit Bull" in their eyes.

Also, Staffordshire Bull Terriers are COMPLETELY different from APBT's. APBT's are, however, basically the same as American Staffordshire Terriers... which is why the AKC has yet to recognize American Pit Bull Terriers, because they elected to recognize the name "American Staffordshire Terriers" instead. My friend has a purebred Amstaff and a purebred Staffy, both registered, and completely different dogs. Her staffy girl is about half the size of her Amstaff, and much more bouncy and outgoing. Her amstaff has a super stable, good-natured temperament but she's reserved with strangers... she has much perkier eyes and a longer muzzle, while the staffy has more drooped eyes and a bullier face.

Anyway, I'd bet anything that ATLEAST 90% of the "Pit Bulls" we see in the media attacking people and animals are not even close to being registered dogs, period. They're a mix of dozens of breeds thanks to sick fighter BYB's, and they're definitely not bred to win shows, pass their CGC test and become therapy dogs

    PLEASE!!!

Why in the world would you want my dog dead? You don't know him, and
obviously don't know ANYthing real about the breed. Or am I wrong and you've personally owned a pittie and it killed everyone in site. Or maybe you've been physically damaged by them in some way that makes you hate them. There are several people here on PT that are owned by pit bulls. And I feel safe in saying that all the people here on PT are "true" dog lovers. No matter what the breed is. And there really isn't any sense in upsetting any of these real dog lovers by your comments, when you obviously know the things you are saying are just going to upset us all. Would it be at all possible to keep your hateful opinions to yourself? This is a dog lovers forum.

So, let's be nice shall we?
