why akitas? (well of course why any dogs, but i have never heard discrimination against akitas.)

Akitas, I believe, are the Japanese fighting dogs. They are extremely protective and loyal-a characteristic of the breed. A lot of them are dog aggressive. So naturally, they're thrown in the pot with everything else.Originally Posted by dab_20

akitas are the biggest of the japanese spitz type breeds..large males can get up to 130, 140 pounds. they were once used to hunt the 800 pound yezo bear in japan. it was also used for dogfighting, as it is very dog aggressive and dominant.
in my opinion, the real question is why not? ..not that I want the akita banned, it's just unfair to label 1 dog breed as "unsafe". many dog breeds are unsafe in the hands of the wrong owner...
Their already trying to put restrictions on Akitas in Illinois,Florida and Canada.Originally Posted by tz1
I am a dog groomer and have yet to be bit by any bully breeds. Most of the dogs that bite at work just "nip" -- they are telling you that they are scared or angry and to leave them alone. But the breeds that have actually tried to viciously attack me are as follows: Lhasa apsos, golden retrievers, border collies, a GSD mix, shih tzus, poodles and a few poodle mixes, cockers, springers, a GSD, and a rottie. The ones I've seen try to attack my co-workers were some of those, as well as chows, a malamute, shiba inus and a shiba mix. I do not hate any of these breeds, in fact I love some of them. I may not like the breed's general characteristics and I might not ever get one, but I am not hateful toward the breed.
Pit bulls were never just bred to kill other dogs -- they were bred to be terriers. Terriers are bred to kill other animals. Pit bulls have no more and no less terrier drive than any other terrier. Jack russels are often used to kill rats -- does this mean they are going to go out and attack a child? So why does one assume that just because a pit bull is dog aggressive that it must be people aggressive too? Most dogs are aggressive in their own way. It doesn't mean that they will go out and kill other dogs or people. And nurture can often overcome nature. Pit bulls, when raised properly, are very good family dogs and love people and other dogs. They don't just suddenly "snap." Everything happens for a reason.
I've been BOO'd!
That's what I thought as well. I know that you can register them as either breed, or you can change your registered APBT to an AST(I believe?), so they're the same. I could be wrong, though.Originally Posted by AllAmericanPUP
