I luv cats. Purring is a method for cats to relax themselves. Almost all purring is done at different situations, and at different places, according to which cat is purring. most of mine do purr quite a bit, but for some reason , it is difficult to hear, because I have no loud "purrers" in my indoor's managerie. I suppose one of the loudest is Fawn, but he only purrs when he is receiving attention. All of the others, especially those who sleep on the bed with me, do a lot of purring but it is difficult to hear.
