No, they put in a new thermostat and some kind of a bleeder pipe. I'm kind of mad that the mechanic didn't tell me it was a cracked head in the first place.

Yeah it doesn't seem like you should have to pay for the rest because if you would have known that you wouldn't have spent the money on the other stuff.

Usually when the headgaskets go the head cracks shortly thereafter. It's a shame.

Normally headgasket leaks are caused by a cracked or warped head. This can be from many issues, to numerous to list, but normally it involves failure of a $.98 part. If the mechanic who worked on it originally has any kind of business ethic, he/she will discount the money paid for work already done and make the correct repair. GM V-6 heads are fairly cheap from junkyards, and they should be able to get a new head and install it for under $1k. (especially if they do as I said, and deduct the cost of the incorrect repair)
