Peppy barked sometimes, but always for a specific reason - to be let in or out, when he was tracking something, sounding an "intruder alert" but the funniest time he would bark is one unique to him. Aunt Bertha was elderly, and most of her contact with friends and family was over the phone. Well, if she said something like "Well, I'll talk to you later" or some other about-to-end-the-conversation phrase, but then remembered one more thing to talk about, Peppy would bark from the time he thought she was going to hang up until she actually did! He heard the signal, he knew it was his turn to have her attention, and she was cheating!

He was a great dog! And, as ilovehounds said, some beagles aren't nearly as "barkative" as Peppy was!
