We did a couple of times...it's funny, he doesn't slow down at all when you grab the jacket, either...

he didn't stay clear all the time, but, i would just lift the paddles up...on the way out there, he was all over the place, and, kept swimming in front of the kayak, and, would make the kayak turn as he would turn around, it was funny. on the way back, though, he got the hang of it, and mostly stayed just far enough away.Wow he must be a really strong swimmer!

did you have in the kayak with you guys till you got out in about the middle and let him lose,, or was he swimming with you the whole way till you got out there?

I don't know why, I was thinking that, too...it wasn't that cold, though. It wasn't bath water like it gets sometimes, but, it wasn't that cold. I think it was just that it was getting a bit dark outside, and, the camera isn't the best either that we used.
