Imagine a world without the FDA. There would be NO oversight of drugs/food claims or safety. Children were poisoned in 1938 because some sulfa drug was compounded with a toxic solvent. I don't even need to mention thalidomide. The FDA, like doctors and scientists, isn't perfect and is made of human beings. Are they too cozy with the pharma industry? Probably; steps are in place to create a proper distance.
Scientific misconduct is similar to other forms of cheating, in that it often comes as a result of poor judgment in dealing with job pressures.
This does not help the reputation of scientists, even though cheats exist in every endeavor.
