It is expensive, but it is a professional program, and worth the money. Does your school or library have a computer that has it on it that you could try out? Also, many scanners come bundled with it. Even the "lite" version that comes with a scanner (for much less than $400 and you get a scanner!), has many of the features you would want to use.
