Oh, still wondering about the world's busiest airport, O'Hare International, and its ORD code? Well once upon a time, before the editor and publisher of the Chicago Tribune, Colonel Robert McCormick suggested a name change as tribute to pilot Lt. Cmdr. Edward "Butch" O'Hare, USN, there was an airstrip well to the northwest of Chicago with a quaint, peaceful name -- Orchard Field.
Sure....leave it until the very last paragraph making me read the entire article! I knew that though, just wanted to confirm.

Another interesting tidbit on O'Hare is that Midway, the airport to the Southwest of the city, was for a long long time the only public airport in Chicago. O'Hare was a military field and not open to the public. So for many years Midway was bigger than O'Hare as far as aiports.

Anyway, thanks for the article Randi, it does explain a lot, but still doesn't make it any easier to figure the airport codes out. Sure, we'll know the reason now as we're reading the article, but 2 minutes from now we still won't know them all.
