I think you have made the right decision to wait. If Rufus was in pain, I think you would know it. It's a decision that can not be undone once it's done. It's also a decision that can be made later. (I posted more of this on your other thread) I have arthritis and am very stiff myself. Some days are better than others. I still enjoy life even though I am stiff and have trouble getting up and down. With summer coming, Rufus may feel better. I know cold weather bothers me a lot. Just enjoy your precious Rufus.
