Samson (and Pheobe, but not as bad) has eyelid agenisis - lacking of a complete outer eyelid and inner conjuctive tissue.

His eye tears to protect it from damage...and to clean it out. When he closes his eyes, they are never totally closed...poor guy.

We clean out their eyes with warm water and then apply artificial tears to help keep his eyes moist.
