OH! Yesterday I saw a bicolor sheltie and the owners were absolutley shocked I knew what he/she was
lol I know the feeling! I am a teenager, I look much younger then I am. I met a guy walking a rodesian ridgeback pup and my frind asked me what breed, I think the owner almost fell over in shock when a teenager knew exactly what breed his dog was, and what they were bred for and known for etc.. lol another couple I met was shocked when I saw them walking their 2 schipperkie's and I took one look and said "schipperkies?" lol I think they were really suprised that I have even heard of the breed much less recignized them lol then I told them that I have a schipperkie mix at home, thats how I recignized the breed so fast lol

people pretty much know that Beanie is a Pomerainian. Gracie on the other hand, i can't believe all the guesses i get for her. they've guessed alaskan husky, malamute, siberian malamute, and my personal favorites "is she part wolf/coyote?"

i mat a guy with a pekingese and he was so shocked that i knew what it was. he said lots of people think he's a pomerainian.

I've seen a few of rare breeds that I was able to ID and the owners were shocked, like a Large Munsterlander or Spinone Italiano.

I've made my own share of dumb mistakes, guessing a spinone was a pointing griffon and a springer was an english cocker, but at least they looked the part and I'm willing to admit that I was wrong. Is Gracie a Karelian Bear Dog?-lol, sorry couldn't help myself siberian huskies are very popular here but must be a rare dog by where you live considering she is a lovely example of what the breed should look like.

I actually have the opposite problem!! Duncan is a mixed breed and people often stop and ask what breed he is...I tell them that he is an American Heinz 57 adopted from the shelter and then they try to guess what type of mix he is...I don't mind, it's interesting to hear some of the ideas people come up with...very few people say gordon setter at all. (In fact I can only think of 1 man who had 2 gordons of his own.) One guy said he was probably part "borderline collie" I died laughing at that one!!!!

There was this really snooty man that used to walk his giant schnauzer at a park near my house. Duncan and I would see them there in the mornings. One day, Duncan was off leash and ran over to this dog (on leash) to play and the man FLIPPED out! He yelled at me to get my "lousy mutt away from his $5,000 show dog."
So I proceeded to tell him that Duncan was no mutt, he was a Hovawart imported from Germany, that their are only 20 Hovawarts in the US and that he cost $8,000!!!
I couldn't resist!! He was so rude!! After that, he wanted to talk but I didn't give him the time of day!!

oh my gawwd. SO many people think Gonzo is mixed or not even a BC at all. . . my favorite was a yard guy who insisted that Gonzo is a SpringerxTerrier. Like, insisted . . then he proceded to tell me that he has a Keeshond and a "TOY Beagle"!! LMAO. I was like, "ok. . I dont think I'll take dog advice from anyone with a 'Toy Beagle'. . jack@ss."

I dont really care that most people think Gonzo is a BC mix. . sometimes I think so too. He is N o t correct, at all he has a total gay tail and he's cow hocked. A lot of people think he's a HuskyxBorder Collie, or a Pit BullxBorder Collie (yes, I'm serious) or an Aussie/Heeler mix

lol hey, someone asked me if Misty was a pittie border collie mix lol most people thing she is a sheperd mix and of coarse the one person who insisted that Misty was a blue heeler/border collie lol I find that very amusing as almost everyone can pick out Shadows breeds she is a border collie cross sheltie, one person yelled out their car window "NICE BORDER COLLIE!" and everyone has picked out either the border collie or the sheltie, its usually "sheltie mixed with what?" or "border collie mixed with what?" mean I dont think she looks particularly like either breed, the only give away for the shletie is her head shape and her coat, the border collie just gives her a little extra size, the tri colour(its the BC type tri not sheltie type tri) and her eyes, she has the BC eye, she uses it to scare people lol

I don't have too many problems with my 2. Although when I tell people Sadie is a Rat Terrier they look at me funny because they have never heard of a Rat Terrier and I have to tell them she looks kinda like a JRT. Never had problems with Maggie though, everyone is always commenting on how hyper she is though.

I've had my share of people calling my two boys Collies. It's understandable since Kai's pretty big for a Sheltie. My photo teacher saw my prints and swore that they were both Border Collies. But other than that, I haven't had anyone insist that they were an outrageously different breed.

Normally when I tell people Oz and Gully are Smooth Collies, they're just interested in hearing more about the breed. I've only had one guy, who since he'd never heard of Smooth Collies, walked away convinced I'd been duped and paid a lot of money for Mix.

We get asked all the time what Bijou is but no one has been too off the mark when they make their guess. They usually think she's a border collie or a sheltie and I find myself saying she's "just" a collie, lol. I guess Bijou's tri markings throw folks off -- they think collies can only be sables, like Lassie (I've been hoping to find a nice blue merle rough to join Bijou -- that will really give people pause!). Then I add she was the only tri rough from a litter of sables and soon after, I hear a story about how they grew up with a collie too, etc., etc., etc.

I think my mother is the worst, though -- because I did grow up with a collie as our family pet when I was a girl, my mother now calls my Bijou by the name of our dearly departed family pet (from 25 years ago!) everytime she visits! It's really weird. She also insists that "toy collies" (she's referring to shelties, but she doesn't realize that) are the same exact breed as collies, "just smaller." Sigh. She's sweet and I adore her, but she has her own ideas about things and she's not about to change her mind now!

People used to ask if Willie was a border collie too, and look doubtful when I told them he was purebred collie. It's funny because not only was he purebred but he was championship material . I guess some people figure only sable collies that look like Lassie are collies.

I've had people ask if Tommy is an Irish setter because of his red coloring, and many ask if he is a mix between Irish setter and golden. I haven't had any insist that pure golden isn't right. (I do have a copy of his pedigree).

On the opposite end, I've had people claim their dog was a purebred and it was obvious to me that it wasn't, or that it was in fact another breed. One in particular that comes to mind was an Akita that the owners insisted was a smooth chow. There are smooth chows, and I've seen pictures of them, but this dog was a textbook example of an Akita (taller, larger, longer muzzle, mottled coat color, etc), and they got the dog at a shelter. Smooth chows still have a distinctive chow face. But I didn't argue with them, I just nodded and smiled and said the dog was beautiful. I think it's a bit silly to stand and argue with someone on what breed their dog is.
