Definitely do not use a Q-tip!!! I made the mistake of using one in Malone's ear, and actually caused some damage.

When do you expect your parents to be home?? If it's today, I would just wait until they get home and ask them for advice. Also, try calling the vet and just ask them for advice over the phone.
