I always respond underneath the original and I delete everything except the part I am responding about. To me, it is extremely confusing to have the response above the original because I don't know what particular part the person is respoinding to! Although I understand it is confusing if the unneccessary parts of the email are not deleted.
Also, in a PM, if you respond above the original, everytime you add a smilie it ends up at the end and you have to cut and paste to put it where it belongs.
I've gotten some long emails from people with lots of questions in them. In that instance I respond like this:
>> Original question. <<
My response.
>>Second original question.<<
My response
>>Third original questions.<<
My response.
That way the person receiving knows exactly which question I'm responding too.
I really think deleting all portions of unneccessary email is important. If the correspondence goes on for awhile and no one deletes anything, the email gets longer and longer - which takes up more bandwidth and more memory on your computer - and it's all unneccessary!
