Well, I was personally lunged at by a pit bull at a dog park in plano. It scared the crap out of me. If he hadn't been on the leash, I would have been hurt. And, my dog, Bruno, was mauled by a pit bull that I had just the day before walked right past (the pit bull was even off leash then) with him, and, no problems. I love pits, don't get me wrong. But, I've heard more horror stories about them directly from sources (either the owner or the people that were horrified) about that breed than any other. I am not blaming the breed at all, anyone who has read any of my posts in the past, know that I'm just as in love with the breed as a lot of the owners. I think they make fantastic pets. But, the fact is, they can be and are trained more frequently than a lot of other breeds to be ugly and mean like that, simply because of the stereotype placed upon them. I mean, you tell someone they're ugly and worthless, chances are they're going to feel ugly and are more likely going to become worthless. And, a lot of the people that breed them are not doing it responsibly at all. I know three people off the top of my head that have had to have their dogs put down because they were dangerously agressive (that's what happens when you get dogs from the type of people they got theirs from). I even warned two of them from buying from the breeders they chose to go to. They unfortunately learned that lesson all too well. I'm not saying that all breeds can't be and aren't vicious at times, too, with inappropriate breeding, or agressive training.

This is so stupid. I can find pictures of Harley that make him look pretty mean too, but he has never bit anyone. I'm not saying that the dog in the picture is nice, but it is possible. You would think a text book would print something that was actually fact!

P.S. Jada, Maximus and all the other pitty pics are adorable. I think my next adoptee with be a Pit or Pit mix

heck, even I have pictures of Riley from when she was younger that make her look vicious too (she had a streak of it in her.. haha). If she was a pitbull people would have looked at her a lot differently and been really scared.

I think you should start stealing people's text books and taping a different picture of a really cute loving APBTs and then slide them back to the owners! This is really horrible. We had a suspected ex fighter and ended up giving him to a better family because he was TOO nice! He would jump up and give face kissies, but that's a little dangerous with a two year old. BTW, the only dogs that have lunged at Niño ever were byber labs, so it's all in the socialazation/breeding.

    vicious?

  14. God.. thats just so stupid.. and really very sad that we are teaching kids more bullsh*t.

The worst bite I ever recieved was from a golden retriever. I've never seen ANY bully breed dog look like that!! On the other hand....Maximus is too wonderful for words!! What a face!

ETA: Pit Bulls ARE more predisposed to dog aggression than other breeds, but among well-loved and well-maintained pitties, aggression towards humans is very rare. As for the dog aggression....As long as you know your dog's limits (And that applies to ALL dogs) you can avoid putting the dog in a situation where he feels like he has to defend himself.

My co-worker has two of the most LOVING couch potato pitties in the world. They live together, play together, and are great with everyone. However, he knows that he shouldn't bring them around his brother's mini aussies, because the pits go into "overload" around the little energetic guys, and the odds that they might get overwhelmed and lash out go up when they're overstimulated like that.

It's about knowing where your own dog's personal limits are. Some pitties are wonderful at the dog park, some need to play more quietly. I'm done rambling now...
