A new member with an interesting hobby

Hello, Im music_beans2000 (I like to listen to music) and I just signed up for this forum today. What makes me different is that I have an interesting dog-related hobby.

I just happen to collect old/worn and used dog collars just for the heck of it. I know it might sound a little odd, but it works for me, even though I don't own a dog.

I also have a question to ask. When you get your dog a new collar, what do you do with the old one if its not terribly worn out yet?


For Amber: Does Katie still have her yellow leather collar she got in 2003, and her red one as well?

Welcome to PT! to answer your question, my dogs collars never get worn out. They all have about 4 that they use so that their collars don't get worn out lol. Plus, my dogs generally don't wear their collars while in the house. They only wear them if we visit someone or if they're out for a walk etc.

We keep them. They don't get worn out, but grown out of when they grow. Its like keeping a baby book. Autumn also has several colours that get switched around.

I just bought all 3 of my dogs new collars. Generally I save them just incase I need them, or give them to friends who get new dogs. Sometimes I make bracelets out of the pretty ones.

I have Kiara's (my newest puppy) first collar on my shelf along with a picture and one of her first bandanas.

I've never had a collar "wear out." They get a little dirty (sometimes permanantly dirty hehe), but I don't mind that. After all, it's not just there for looks!

I have a bunch of collars for a dog I don't have yet too lol. I am getting a pup next year and I like to be prepared. I must have 10 collars by now. They are all very nice ones too.

Welcome! Blaze has something like 2 or 3 collars, and they never get worn out!

I give mine to the SPCA, as well as old leashes. They're not normally worn out; sometimes I just get a hankerin' for a change!

I keep them around just in case. You never know when you'll find a stray dog that doesn't have a collar on!!

Niño has a lot of collars, and we just keep them arround for spares, visiting dogs, strays, when he needs a "dirty" collar for the dog park, etc.

When one of mine passes away, I always keep their collar and tags. I have a dream catcher above my bed. Instead of the usual feathers hanging from the bottom of it, it has the collars and tags of my old friends attached.

Collars of dogs I don't have anymore are just about the most important matereal thing I own.

Since were on that subject, when your dog breaks a collar, what happens to it?

Ditto. But i have kept all puppy collars and they will be treasured forever .

In answering your question about broken collars, i dont buy collars that will brake, i value my dogs lives too much. Its not worth the risk just to save a few dollars.

Are you serious? I guess I could understand the appeal of collecting different or unusual dog collars and certainly like many of us who have dogs, we keep them around for a variety of different reasons, but you really lost me on the broken collars part.
