Whoa, I'm gone for a couple of days and look what I miss. I was in no way trying to belittle or degrade small dogs or offend anyone. These are nicknames that I use, some more than others when describing little dogs in a playful manner. As for lil' $h!t dogs, there are big $h!t dogs too. The term "$h!t" being referred to as "tha $h!t" or "all that", better than the rest, which little dogs think they are and rightfully so. They strutt around acting like they are the size of a Rottweiler. The stereotype behind little dogs is that when you think of a small dog, you think of a dog being spoiled, carried around everywhere, groomed everyother week, basically living in the high society of the dog world. For a lot of them, that's what they were originally created for, to sit in a lap and look cute. There are good and bad, true and false stereotypes. Just because it is a stereotype, doesn't mean it's bad. Is it degrading when someone with a small dog sees my Pits and calls their own dog "a snack" for my dog? Which dog is that degrading to? Pit Bulls used to be considered the "nanny dogs", a stereotype that owners now days have done their best to get away from. I use each nickname to refer to each little dog in their own way, not just for all of them in general and it's all for fun. For example:

-little prissy breeds that require a lot of grooming: foo foo dogs
-little tough breeds that act big: lil $h!t dogs
-little dogs that just won't shut up: yippy dogs
-little annoying dogs that just won't go away: kick dogs
    -ankle biters is self explanatory

I myself have a lil $h!t dog who thinks he's a Pit Bull. He's a 8lb Chihuahua/Boston Terrier? mix and he's the toughest, baddest, guard dog in a house full of Pit Bulls. He used to "beat up" a Rottie I was fostering, because he thought he was "tha $h!t". Guess I won't post the nicknames for big dogs.

Then I feel sorry for you. I like ALL the dogs that I meet. I feel all dogs are special, regardless their size or noise level. How sad for you that you don't feel that way about all the wonderful dogs you meet - small or large.

I lOVE all dogs, but I prefer small breeds. Mine are definitely not yappy (the BIG dog behind me never, ever shuts up though, what does that make him?), they're not ankle biters (well Millie will bite you, but not on your ankles), they're surely not froo froo, BUT they all think they're big dogs and don't act like frightened little babies when face to face with a big dog.

I find the majority of your comments rude and offensive, and I hate when people degrade small dogs, because they "don't like them” or “ haven’t met any they like". You wouldn't like it if people intimated that they hated your breed, or despised slobbery large dogs would you? I prefer small dogs, and never say anything derogatory about large breeds, though they’re obviously not my preference. In other words, if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything.

IRescue452 - it's not that I find "squeak toys" derogatory in itself, but more the way you used it. If you called my dogs sweet little squeak toys as you rubbed their bellies, that would be endearing. The way you used it was not.

Sorry to rant like this, but this is a sore spot for a lot of small dog owners, and it just irritates the heck out of me to hear it over and over.

Sorry you feel sorry for me. Small dogs are great for some people, but just not me. I'm not saying I hate them all, it is just that all the small dogs that I have met I liked, but just for a visit, I don't think I could live with any of them. I am also bothered by the fact that they are so small.

(Ok, I know you will have something to say about the fact that thier smallness bothers me and that you will probably ask me how many small dogs I have meet and what breeds. )

I love small dogs, but I would never want to have one, just because I like to have a big dog. But I'd have to say my favourite small breed is the basenji. Great dogs.

I don't really care what breeds you've met or what bothers you about them, I just think it's sad when an animal lover (which most PTers are) dislikes certain breeds because of their size, color, "bad" ones they've met, etc. I have a few breeds that I like a bit less than others, but I don't go around debasing those breeds in FRONT of the very people that own those breeds. That's just hurtful and rude.

It's kinda like spouting off mean cat jokes, or saying rodents creep you out. It's just rude when you know very well there are people here who love their pets dearly. No one wants to hear their loved ones referred to in a derogatory way, even if they aren't your preference.

Who said they didn't think they are special?

Who said they hated or despised small dogs? I don't see anywhere on this thread where those words were printed. They are just nicknames, there is nothing derogatory meant by them. Just because I have nicknames for them doesn't mean I don't like them or think they aren't special.

Now if I were to call them "disgusting little hairballs with no purpose", then THAT would be derogatory.

I didn't say anyone SAID that, I said they intimated that. You and I both know that no one stated that they hate little dogs, but it has been intimated that little dogs are lesser in some people eyes. As I said, I think that the nicknames are fine, it's just all in the way they're used.

Perhaps it's just that it's hard to read how someone is intending to say something, but I don't think there's anyway to misconstrue this:

I was joking. I didn't literally mean that they were "discusting little things" now, did I?

  11. I'm sorry, but small dogs don't strut around like Rottweilers. Lexi doesn't do that. Sorry to say, she respects how small she is but some small dogs don't like to be as little as they are and in that case want to feel big, so they act big.

Calling little dogs names like that can actually torture a person inside, I can't just sit back and look at people saying things like that about my dog behind my back. I don't have ANYTHING against ANY dog. I love them all, big or small!

Also, if you intimidate a small dog, then they will go for the closest thing to the ground, that being the ankles. So you inflict that upon yourself, its not the dog's fault. Little dogs are just as good as ANY other dog out there.

I have had my fair share of owning big dogs and small dogs, and can not take either vote because they are all simply amazing in their own individual ways! Thats what makes them so special! They are a BIG dog disguised in a little dogs body!

And saying they are squeak toys, was really rude, and affected a lot of us. Besides, squeak toys are adorable! That may be the way you feel, but its best not to put it out to us and say that you want a "REAL DOG"They are all real.

My choice of other is a cairn terrier. They have the cutest faces and the sweetest personalities. I know, I have had 2 of them and wouldn't trade them for the world.
