I use to grease my gerbil's wheel with shortening too...and yup, he'd eat it!
We use Pam, the vegetable oil spray, on Olivia's wheel. Olivia is much more enchanted with her water bottle though....it dangles from a wire on the side of her cage...we call it her punching bag, as she bats it around every night!!!
