My own wear their collars all the time except bed time. I take them off when we go to sleep because I don't want the jingling tags to wake me up and if the fosters in the other room hear the tags jingle in the middle of the night, they'll all wake up and start barking.

My suggestion for your boyfriend would be to compramise. The dog wears the collar most of the time, but he doesn't have to wear it to bed.
