The dog you are talking about is Greyfriars Bobby the Skye Terrier who lay every day on his master's grave from his death in 1858 to 1872! Bobby was presented with a collar by the Lord Provost of Edinburgh. He was painted and photographed and was the subject of a novel written in 1912 by Eleanor Atkinson. This inspired many films about him including a weepie made by Disney.
