Well, he finally settled in enough to have a snooze.

And, I think I'm about to do the same ( I can stay up late, I don't have to work tomorrow!), but just before I put a close to Docker's "gotcha day" I wanted to post a sincere and very big THANK-YOU to everybody here. Through this "ordeal", all of your views, replies, advice, encouragement, well-wishes, etc. have been very-much appreciated and we look forward to many happy updates!!
    Steve

Yeah, Docker is settling in! Look like things are going to work out okay! As you said, I think each day he will get to feeling more comfortable and safer.

    What a happy beginning!!!!

Congratulations on being a third-time doggy daddy
    - where're the cigars????

Actually the timeing is probably pretty good, if you're going to be home and off work a day or so his first days in the house - it'll make things easier for everyone to 'settle' into the new dynamics.

We recently adopted a stray Cat - Teal'c - and noticed the same "dart for the door' behavior at first. (he has also learned to use the doggy door on his own!) I think when an animal has to fend for itself outside, they almost have to be in a permanment state of 'flight or fight' mode to survive. it's not so much a trust issue, as it's become a survival instinct.

As they learn that nothing is going to 'attack' or chase them, they learn to 'relax' more.

We have learned with Teal'c that if we talk (to him or ourselves)as we move around the house from room to room, he bolts and hides less and tends to 'wait and see' more before running to hide. he has learned to identify our voices, and while he will still hide when my son's friends are visiting - Jon can come walking down the hall, and as long as Teal'c hears Jon's VOICE, the noise he makes no longer makes him dash for cover. ( why is it that teenagers have to stomp thru the house like they have 200lb feet?)

so it might help Docker relax, if you keep talking to him as you move around the house - in a soft voice, so he knows it's you around the corner, and not something new and scary that might 'pounce' on him.

good luck with Docker looks like a great family you have there!

Sandra said it best, bless you for your determination and for never giving up on this sweet boy who needed a home. It was meant to be! I almost got teary eyed, seeing his picture as he snoozes away contentedly in his new loving forever home. Outstanding story, and you are an outstanding person, Steve

Alright, day two is almost done. There is already a very noticeable improvement in Docker, he is gaining confidence daily! Him, Bud and Tash play outside quite a bit, but in the house they still growl at him a bit when he goes to them/sniffs them. He LOVES stuffed animals! I have been working with him on a leash and he still needs improvement but I can already notice a difference. I gave him a seperate food bowl but Buddy and Tasha have been eating that and he is eating from their bowl with no squirmishes so I guess I'll leave it at that for now. He is such a good-natured little guy! So, I guess, there is a long way to go, but in all honesty I didn't expect to see any results yet so I guess we are ahead of schedule. He digs this indoor-house dog routine!! He seems to just watch what Tasha does and follows her. I took treats out in the yard today and was working with him but including Bud and Tash, when I told them to sit he of course had no idea what I meant so he looked at Tasha, sat, and then gave me this really funny look, like: "If this ain't right, blame her!". He's just a typical pup in a lot of ways, EVERYTHING is interesting! So, yeah, so far, we are all really happy!

Thanks for the interest delidog, and pats all around!
    Steve

What great news that all is going well with Docker and Sasha and Buddy! Our Snoopy did the same thing Docker is doing - he watched Dazzi and he learned very quickly imitating her. Nice to know he is ahead of the schedule on his learning a whole new life!
