You did the right thing....Once I found an OLD golden retriever who I originally thought had been mistreated...when his mom showed up to get him she told me that he had some mental problems that resulted in him being a little shy and jittery all the time. Poor old guy had just wandered until he couldn't go anymore.

Here's hoping your old fella is reunited with someone who loves him very soon.
