INDIANAPOLIS -- You could call this week's RTV6 Leadership Award winner a sort of canine adoption counselor.

Kat Roberts adopted her first greyhound racing dog from Florida eight years ago, but four years ago she founded the Indianapolis chapter of Greyhound Pets of America, GPA, RTV6's Martha Weaver reported.

With more than 200 dogs retired from racing on any given day, Roberts' work is never done.

"If we can't get to them quick enough, they end up disappearing," Roberts said. "You give these dogs the least bit of attention and comfort and two square meals a day, and they will give it back to you 10-fold,"

Roberts is expecting another shipment from Florida on Saturday.

"When I bring up a load it's usually 20 to 25 dogs, and I have a place for each and every dog to go," Roberts said. "They travel in an air-conditioned dog-hauling trailer, and when we pull them off the truck they're wagging their tails and bouncing around, and they go home and they act like they've been there all their lives."

Roberts called her work "rewarding." She said the people who bring the dogs into a home are not only saving a life, they're bringing joy and love into a home.
