I think eBays policy is they require a credit card if you try and sign up form a freebie email account (Hotmail, Yahoo...etc.), but if you have a ISP account they don't require a CC. That may have changed, but that is how I remember it a few years ago. I have one CC that I rarely use, but keep it in case of emergency. I had to add some nights on a hotel reservation once, and I had booked them with my debit card. The card was rejected for the extra nights, so if I wouldn't have had my CC with me, I would have been in for a big hassle, the worst could have been no hotel room! A debit card works like a CC for most things, so if you don't want a CC, maybe a debit card would be the answer? You can't charge on it so if the money is not in your account, you couldn't use it anyway.

I abused CCs when I was in my twenties - I had a large balance that took me awhile to pay off. I won't let myself get in that situation again, but I couldn't imagine living without cards.

I love eBay. I have found stuff that I can't buy in stores, and some great bargains. I don't buy much anymore, but last fall I got a great cat tree and water fountain for my cats much cheaper than places like Petsmart charge.
