You know the little circle thing on the top? Well turn it so it's on the "P" setting. Then make sure the camera has the little flower setting on. ( Press the bottom arrow out of the four arrows until the little flower shows up in the bottom righthand corner). Press the button to take the picture just a bit, until it focuses to your liking, then press it all of the way. I normally take close-ups outside, in the sunlight, with the camera close to them. With the flash off, of course.
