Today my arms are empty,
Cold and lost without you there.
You journied on without me,
And now I sit in dark despair.
You brought me so much joy, my love,
You brightened up each day.
A dear sweet friend to be proud of,
But now you've gone far, far away.
Now we're all left here to wonder,
As you wander off somewhere.
If we shall be torn asunder,
Grieving always, unaware...
That truly you have not quite left,
You still cuddle close at night.
While we cry and search, alone, bereft...
You are still shining bright.
And when I sleep I hear a whisper,
And feel whiskers in my ear:
"Mommy, please don't be too sad,
I'll always be right here."
And sometimes when I sit in thought,
I see you in your favourite spot,
Your contended face is not forgot!
And then you're gone, and I am not...
And when at last my life runs dry,
Slipping off to the unknown.
I will not have to say goodbye,
Not to Earth or sea or sky,
Never again to cry, or sigh,
Or demand to know why you had to die!
For we both shall journey home.
