Bailey,
Can Maine Coon (or Siamese, or...) breed characteristics be passed every other generation? Could breed characteristics be passed to only part of a litter? It might be true...
Misty, an abandoned calico, mated once and only once with Socks, an orange tabby and white. They produced a calico and a tortie point (a pointed cat whose points are tortoiseshell instead of solid). So, yes to both questions! I know this because I fostered Misty after her parents abandoned her, and it was my friend who owned Socks and knew when they mated (the city of Euless convinced her with an arrest warrant to neuter him, unfortunately not until after his adventure with Misty).
