My Pumpkin, toy poodle who went to the Rainbow Bridge at the age of 17, was increasingly *brave." On day when he was sleeping, I walked right up to him and clapped about 5 inches from his ear. No response.... I don't remember how old you said Smokey is, but I think you said he is a 'senior doggie' and it could be that his sudden braveness is due to lack of hearing.
