I would've done exactly what you did. If you hadn't gone there, I'm sure they would've not survived.

One thing you can do for their eyes is put warm compresses on them. This will bring out any goo and help their eyes from getting crusted over.

Another thing you can do with the kitten formula (it's what I've been doing for Spike) is mix canned kitten food with formula and let them go at that. Also, you can put a little Pedialyte (to prevent dehydration) in with the dry food to soften it.
